Call for Research Assistance Candidates and Research Incentive Assistance Candidates

The Ono Medical Research Foundation (Kanesuke Ueda, Foundation Director and Senior Managing Director of Ono Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.) hereby announces that it will begin accepting research assistance candidates (12th program, 1999) and research incentive assistance candidates (8th program, 1999) as described in the attached document.



Call for Research Assistance Candidates and Research Incentive Assistance Candidates for 1999


This is to announce that applications for the above programs will be accepted according to the procedure described below.


I. Ono Medical Research Assistance (12th program)

1. Theme and Candidates

(1) Assistance Themes
* Research on pathophysiology of diseases accompanying lipid metabolism abnormalities
* Research on the mechanism of occurrence of lipid metabolism abnormalities
* Research on the treatment of diseases accompanying lipid metabolism abnormalities
* Research on the immunology of diseases accompanying lipid metabolism abnormalities
* Other research of a similar nature

(2) Eligible Candidates
* Those persons closely affiliated with the practice of health care and engaged in research on elucidation of the pathophysiology and mechanism of occurrence as well as treatment of diseases accompanying lipid metabolism abnormalities that is recognized as contributing to the future of health care and improvement of the welfare of citizens shall be eligible for research assistance.

2. Research Grants: Up to 10 grants in the amount of ¥2,000,000 per theme will be made available.


II. Ono Medical Research Incentive Assistance (8th program)

1. Themes and Candidates

(1) Assistance Themes: As above

(2) Eligible Candidates: Young researchers (age 40 or under as of June 1, 1998) having a strong interest in research and who also fulfill the above requirements shall be eligible for research incentive assistance.

2. Research Incentive Grants: Up to 10 grants in the amount of 1,000,000 per theme will be made available.


III. Exceptions

(1) Persons belonging to the same research department (class) or research division (research laboratory) as the selection committee members of this foundation are not eligible.

(2) Persons having received Ono Medical Research Assistance or Ono Medical Research Incentive Assistance, as well as persons belonging to the same department (class) or research division (research laboratory) are not eligible for two years following receipt of that assistance.

(3) Researchers belonging to research institutes of foundations established by corporate contributions are not eligible. However, if that foundation is a nonprofit organization and is qualified to apply for scientific research subsidies, researchers affiliated with such foundations are eligible.

(4) Candidates cannot apply for research conducted outside Japan.

(5) Applications cannot be filed for both research assistance and research incentive assistance. In the case of applying for one form of assistance, persons belonging to the same department (class) or same research division (research laboratory) are not eligible.

IV. Application Method

Complete the application form and submit the form to the relevant senior recommending person (the dean of your university, research director of your laboratory, president of your college, or director in the case of other research institutes) to obtain a recommendation.

V. Number of Candidate Recommendations

Each recommending person is limited to giving one recommendation for each type of research assistance (a total of two recommendations).

VI. Application Deadline

Applications must be postmarked no later than September 16, 1998.
